Trying to travel as light as possible and carry only what is really needed avoiding any expensive and useless items I ended up with a camera and a GPS navigator. My desire to be disconnected from the world left me without a phone or any other means of communication. A medium size backpack was half empty.
Canon Powershot G5
Very robust and reliable camera with the ability to adjust almost any parameters manually.
I made over 1000 high resolution photos and used 3 high capacity memory cards.
Garmin Etrex Legend
Handheld GPS reciever with loadable maps and abilities to store waypoints and save and navigate tracks. This was my only mean of navigation and proved to be a tremendous help in many situations. I had loaded general maps of the regions and neighboring countries with roads, lakes, major and smaller towns. During the trip I saved coordinates of many new places as well as GPS tracks following my movements that can be overlayed on a map.
